From the Point of Buckquoy, Birsay you can walk across the causeway at low tide to the Brough of Birsay, a tidal island, accessible only at low tide, which has the remains of pictish and norse settlements, as well as a modern lighthouse. Or you can take the path on the right to Skiba Geo, overlooking the meeting of the Atlantic and the North Sea, to a whalebone sculpture from a right whale washed up in the 1870’s. The post is part of the jawbone, the crossbar of the sculpture is the back of the skull. It is suggested the whalebone was possibly sited as a fishing mark.
